Community structure and tree diversity in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bordin,Kauane Maiara; Ferreira,Letícia Daiana; Rosina,Adriano; Malacarne,Marciana; Zanotelli,Patricia; Adami,Samuel Fernando; Vendruscolo,Giovana Secretti.
Abstract: Local and regional environmental variations lead to different species composition, creating transitional areas. An example is the Araucaria and Seasonal forest in southern Brazil. Our objectives were (1) to describe the tree community structure and composition of a subtropical forest in southern Brazil and (2) to compare the floristic relationships between two forest typologies (Araucaria and Seasonal forest) in order to characterize the study area and the distribution patterns of tree species. We conducted a survey at Chapecó National Forest (in southern Brazil) in an area of 1.2 ha, where all individuals ≥ 30 cm of circumference at breast height were sampled. Community structure was described using the traditional phytosociological parameters....

Floristic and phytosociology in a physiognomic gradient of riverine forest in Cerrado, Campinas, SP Biota Neotropica
Carvalho,Marina Begali; Bernacci,Luís Carlos; Coelho,Ricardo Marques.
Knowledge on floristic composition and vegetation structure is essential to preserve plant biodiversity and environmental conditions. A floristic and structural survey of woody vegetation was carried out in a physiognomic gradient of riparian forest of Cerrado vegetation, Campinas - SP. We sampled 25 plots, distributed along five transects, located perpendicularly to a stream. We found 971 individuals (65 standing dead trees) distributed among 35 families and 80 species. We recorded one single individual of exotic species (Citrus limon – rangpur) and a large number of individuals of endangered species (Luetzelburgia guaissara, Myroxylon peruiferum andTrichilia hirta) indicating that the Santa Elisa study area retains much of the original characteristics of...

Floristic relationships among inland swamp forests of Southeastern and Central-Western Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Teixeira,A.P.; Assis,M.A..
We evaluated the floristic relationships among 20 swamp forests of Southeastern and Central-Western Brazil using multivariate analyses. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and TWINSPAN (Two way indicator species analysis) indicated two distinct floristic groups among forests, according to the Phytogeographic Province (Paranaense or Cerrado) and their climate conditions, phytophysiognomies, and species composition. Within the same province, edaphic conditions and geographical distance, among other factors, may be responsible for similarities or dissimilarities among the forests floras. Our results indicated that, despite the low a diversity, γ diversity is high among the forests, as a result of the low floristic similarities among the remnants and the...

Patterns of plant use in religious offerings in Bali (Indonesia) Acta Botanica
Sujarwo,Wawan; Caneva,Giulia; Zuccarello,Vincenzo.
ABSTRACT Balinese Hinduism has incorporated local animistic traditions and offerings, which play a key role in the religious ceremonies called “five holy ceremonies” or Panca yadnya. Since plants constitute fundamental elements of these offerings, we aimed to contribute to their knowledge. We analyzed plants used during ceremonies by interviewing key informants in four ancient villages of Bali (Bali aga). We identified exclusive and common species associated with different kinds of ceremonies and assessed whether there was any pattern in the selection of plants for the various offerings. We recorded 125 species (112 genera, 49 families), most of which belong to the wild ethnoflora of Bali, but also 36 species that are not native to the Malesian region. The...

Pollen types and levels of total phenolic compounds in propolis produced by Apis mellifera L. (Apidae) in an area of the Semiarid Region of Bahia, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MATOS,VANESSA R.; ALENCAR,SEVERINO M.; SANTOS,FRANCISCO A.R..
Twenty-two propolis samples produced by Apis mellifera L. in an area of the Semiarid region the the State of Bahia (Agreste of Alagoinhas), Brazil, were palynologically analyzed and quantified regarding their levels of total phenolic compounds. These samples were processed using the acetolysis technique with the changes suggested for use with propolis. We found 59 pollen types belonging to 19 families and 36 genera. The family Fabaceae was the most representative in this study with nine pollen types, followed by the family Asteraceae with seven types. The typesMikania and Mimosa pudica occurred in all samples analyzed. The types Mimosa pudica andEucalyptus had frequency of occurrence above 50% in at least one sample. The highest similarity index (c. 72%)...

Species richness in restinga vegetation on the eastern Maranhão State, Northeastern Brazil Acta Amazonica
SERRA,Flávia Cristina Vieira; LIMA,Patrícia Barbosa; ALMEIDA JR,Eduardo Bezerra de.
ABSTRACT The State of Maranhão comprises the second largest coastline in Brazil. Nonetheless, few floristic surveys on restinga vegetation have been performed in Northeastern Brazil. This study aimed to survey floristic in a restinga of Maranhão, and to assess its similarity to other restingas in the states of Pará and Piauí. Botanical specimens were sampled at Sítio Aguahy, in the municipality of São José de Ribamar, along the eastern coast of Maranhão between June/2012 and October/2013. Species identification and life forms classification followed the usual methods employed in floristic studies. Similarities in plant composition of six sites were estimated based on cluster analysis through Bray-Curtis distance. In the studied area, we found 116...

Structure and floristic relationships between Cerrado sensu stricto sites on two types of substrate in northern Cerrado, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lemos,Helena Lara; Pinto,José Roberto Rodrigues; Mews,Henrique Augusto; Lenza,Eddie.
We described and compared the floristic composition, richness, species diversity and structure of the tree-shrub component in pairs of Typical Cerrado (Cerrado Típico) and rocky outcrop Cerrado (Cerrado Rupestre) in two localities in Tocantins State. In each locality, we set up 10 plots of 20 × 50 m at a site, the Cerrado Típico and other Cerrado Rupestre, and sampled the individuals with Db30cm ≥ 5 cm. The rocky outcrop Cerrado did not present any trend towards lower richness and basal area compared to the Cerrado on deep soil. Few species occurred across the four sites and only two important species (Anacardium occidentale and Qualea parviflora) in the four vegetation structure were common to both environments assessed. Furthermore, the occurrence of...

The tree-shrub vegetation in rocky outcrop cerrado areas in Goiás State, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Santos,Tassiana Reis Rodrigues dos; Pinto,José Roberto Rodrigues; Lenza,Eddie; Mews,Henrique Augusto.
We describe the floristic composition of the tree-shrub vegetation in 10 areas of rocky outcrop cerrado in Goiás State, Brazil. Ten 20×50m plots (totaling 1ha) were established and all of the individuals with diameters at 30cm above soil level (DB30) ³5cm were included in the sampling. Comparative analyses of the flora were realized using similarity indices (Sørensen and Czekanowski), classification analysis (TWINSPAN), and the Mantel test. A total of 13,041 tree-shrub individuals were sampled, distributed among 219 species, 129 genera and 55 families. Fabaceae was the most well-represented family, followed by Myrtaceae, Melastomataceae, Vochysiaceae, Malphigiaceae, and Rubiaceae. Fully 42.3% of the comparisons evaluated by the Sørensen index were...
